Junior Kindergarten

(For children who are 4 years old by the start of school)

Our Junior Kindergarten class is anchored around our “Friend of the Week” program. Learning to be a good friend, how to cooperate, share, and respect one another is a key part of life at ATB&B. We use Friend of the Week as one of the ways to foster this sensibility. Each week, a child is paired with one of their classmates. Teachers help guide children through the complicated emotions that can arise when paired with someone new or when asked to step out of a comfort zone with a new activity. All the skills that come from having to cooperate, respect, and engage with someone new are honed as children make new friendships and build upon already-established relationships.

The JK year provides many opportunities for children to create and express themselves and their ideas through art processes, imaginative play, dramatic recreations, and sensory materials. Children are also engaged in science, math, and music experiences that teach fundamental skills like curiosity, collaboration, and persistence.

JK students enjoy time on our playground as well as venturing off campus to local parks or Kenilworth Beach for a chance to grow and explore in the natural world. Each week also provides a chance to participate in Chapel where they hear stories from the Bible, learn songs, pray, and celebrate God’s love and wonder.

By the end of the JK year, we know that our students are prepared for the world beyond ATB&B and the next steps in their educational journeys.
