All the Cool Kids are Doing It!

by Jill Klusendorf, Director of Community Life

"I am a Fine Musician" has been in my head all week. Whether you've heard it on the Dick van Dyke Show, or on Sesame Street, it's more than just a catchy ditty, it's a melodic call to action! (Okay, maybe that's stretching it a bit, but you get the point!)

We all are fine musicians
We practice every day
And if you'd like to join us
We'll show you the way
Come join us. Come join us.
Come take a part and join us

Ta-tada-ta-ta, ta-tada-ta-ta, ta-ta, ta-ta, ta-a-a
Waaah, Waaah, Waaah, Waaah
Oom-pa, oom-pa oom-pa oom-pa, oom-pa-oom
Waaah, Waaah, Waaah, Waaah
Deedle-ee dee dee, Deedle deedle dee-dee deedle-deedle dee dee deedle deedle dee!

There are so many great opportunities to get involved here at CHC, and so many wonderful, caring, and kind-hearted parishioners just waiting to take you under their wings! Much like the musicians in the lyrics above, they are certainly fine. Unlike said musicians, they needn't literally practice every day, but I can assure you, the mindset is there. The generous spirit of those who volunteer cannot be confined to time or space. It permeates their lives and infuses their days with a general feeling of peace. And, it turns out, it's actually good for you! Here are some health and social benefits of giving back to others, whether it's the gift of time, talent, or treasure.

Volunteering-

  • Reduces stress: Experts report that focusing on someone other than yourself interrupts usual tension-producing patterns.
  • Makes you healthier: Moods and emotions, like optimism, joy, and control over one's fate, strengthen the immune system.
  • Promotes personal growth and self-esteem.
  • Fosters empathy and self-efficacy.
  • Brings people together.
  • Unites people from diverse backgrounds to work toward a common goal, while building camaraderie and teamwork.
  • Strengthens our community.
Uncovers hidden talents that may change your view on your self-worth.

So, getting back to our melodic call to action,

And if you'd like to join us
We'll show you the way
Come join us. Come join us.
Come take a part and join us!

Here are two upcoming opportunities to share your gifts with us. While I am listing the dates and times, there are certainly things to do behind the scenes, when the kids are asleep-just ask, we can show you the way!

Piano Dedicatory Concert and Party: Sunday, March 2 at 2 p.m. in the Great Hall. We need donations of baked goods and volunteers to set-up, serve and clean-up. We also welcome any piano-playing prodigies of any age to share their talent with us.

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner & Appalachian Service Project Fundraiser: March 4, 5:30 p.m. in the Great Hall. Donations of silent auction items, gift-gathering and auction assistance, babysitters, set-up/décor, and clean-up are some of the areas we are looking for help in.

As always, I welcome your suggestions so....Please, please, please contact Jill Klusendorf at jcklusendorf@holycomforter.org or 847/251.6120 ext. 111 if you'd like to be a apart of the start of SOMETHING EVEN MORE WONDERFUL!
