A New Year In September!

by Charlotte Long, Youth Ministry Coordinator

"All their life in this world and all their adventures in Narnia had only been the cover and the title page: now at last they were beginning Chapter One of the Great Story which no one on earth has read: which goes on for ever: in which every chapter is better than the one before." - C.S. Lewis, The Last Battle, 1956

Welcome newcomers and welcome back to veterans! If your child was a part of the confirmation class last year, or are brand new to our Rite 13 Program, we've got plenty for you to do! The calendar year of 2013 - 2014 is a Project Year. Since Confirmation is only every other year, we have found it necessary to keep that gap year full of the same sense of life, enthusiasm and friendship that Confirmation brings to a group of young people. As it stands, every year that Confirmation is not scheduled will be dedicated to the planning and preparation of a weekend service and/or fundraising for a charity. These projects will both prepare your children for Confirmation next year or give them a taste of what High School Youth group is like- whichever is coming up for them in the fall of 2014. While we're still finalizing what this means on a week to week basis, we know it will include:

*A weekend retreat and/or service trip that is in the city or nearby (several locations being looked into.)

*Sunday school every Sunday at 10 AM Your fill of church lock-ins, bowling nights, pizza movie nights, etc. (we're shooting for once a month.)

In the meantime, I just want to thank you all for making the effort to get your kids to church school every Sunday. Taking forty-five minutes with them to reflect and vocalize their questions can make an astounding difference. Your children are so thoughtful and present; thank you for sharing them
with us. Thank you for making your child's journey to know God a priority.

Hooray, we're back! To the oldies and newcomers, we can't wait to hang with you at last! Here are the things you need to know for September (no, we don't know where we're going on the service trip yet, just chill out for a minute):

* Sunday school is still a thing and it's still at 10AM. If you're here for the 9AM service with your family, you might as well come on downstairs and talk about difficult/wonderful things with us.

*We're starting a YOUTH GROUP! Youth Group will be less bibliocentric than Sunday mornings, and will include a mix of laser tag and movies and eating and star gazing, but also reflections, prayer time, discussion and projects that we never have time for on a regular Sunday morning. We'll be trying a couple different time slots, but to start off we're trying SUNDAY NIGHTS at 6PM - 8PM, here at Holy Comforter, starting SEPTEMBER 8th.

Which brings me to...

*The Alternative Service! Holy Comforter is starting a fabulous 5pm service starting SEPTEMBER 8th that pushes the definition of what our worship to God "must" be. If you've ever felt that it was hard to connect with God during church, wished church wasn't so dang early in the morning or are just tired of the old hymns, you should absolutely try this service. Best of all, Youth Group is going to be RIGHT after it at 6pm. And we'll give you dinner. Duh.

Try it all out! Mix and match! See you soon!
