Spring's Flurry

by Charlotte Long, Youth Ministry Coordinator

Easter Tide is upon us! And as is Spring's custom, there is a flurry of activity both below ground and above.

Most importantly, plans are feverishly being made for the High School summer mission trip to Joplin, MO, which we hope to have lots of kids attend. When I was in High School, that one week every year of serving on a mission trip to Biloxi, Mississippi, or New Orleans, Louisiana, or Lecher County, Kentucky - those weeks were for me what my Sunday School teacher used to call "Mountain Top Experiences."

The phrase refers the story in Matthew 17 when Jesus takes Peter, James and John up to the top of a mountain so that they may witness what we call "The Transfiguration," as well as a visit from the some superstar Hebrew prophets. Needless to say, the disciples are quite changed by this experience. But, as we know, they have to come down off the mountain eventually. We cannot stay forever in the bliss of Jesus' love and peace and power. Real life comes at us, and we are challenged to keep that sense of the Mountain Top in our daily lives. These weeks doing service have been that for me: the brief moment when I see God in everything I do, in the hard work, in humility and in fellowship with those leading very different lives from my own. It may not be easy or fun all of the time (although I have always had a gob of fun) or even rewarding in the way we expect it to be; but God is guiding us, and we have only to open our hearts and say, "Here I am," in order to be with Him on the Mountain Top. I can't wait to experience this with the extraordinary youth of Church of the Holy Comforter.

If you are in high school and want to attend the mission trip: please email me at cbllong@holycomforter.org and I'll give you all the details you could possibly want. You don't have to have attended Sunday School this year (or ever) - we still would love to have you! We often can work out conflicts with summer sports or classes.

If you are an adult interested in chaperoning/working alongside our youth: email me, as well.

Happy Easter! The Lord is Risen!
