Alleluia on the Avenue 2015

"Bye, Bye, Miss American Pie"

by Fr. Chris Hardman

Bye, bye, Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry
And them good ole boys were drinking whiskey ‘n rye
Singing' this'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die"
                                     Don McLean

I know that most of you probably do not have a Chevy to drive to the levee, so drive your Lexus to the nexus, CHC, on May 31st. We won't be drinking whiskey 'n rye, but we will have some wonderful and meaningful wine. And this certainly won't be a day you will die; it will be a day you will live!

American Pie, of course, is a popular song written and sung by Don McLean. It came out in 1971 and was number one on the pop charts for 4 weeks in 1972. It is fun to sing, but you may wonder what the song is about. Who is this "Miss American Pie" to which he says "bye, bye"? Some say it is a reference to Don McLean's girlfriend at the time who might have been an American Beauty contestant of some sort. Some say it might be a reference to that wonderful advertisement that was prevalent at the time "Apple Pie and Chevrolet." Or, "Pie" might be referring to all of the American Events of the 1960's which McLean experienced after the music died-that is, after Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper died on February 3, 1959 in a plane crash.

I think it is all of that and you will have to come to the picnic to see what significance that has for your life now! We have several members of the band that played for our Bright and Beautiful Bash to lead us in our music. We will play some music of the 70's, but also some modern day hits that teenagers and young adults are listening to today. If American Pie is a reference to the troubled 1960's, we need to look at today's music to see where God has been leading us since that time.

This year's picnic falls on "Trinity Sunday!" So come and experience the three "men" [sic] I admire most-the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. I guarantee they will all be there! So, you will not want to miss it and you will want to invite your friends and neighbors to join us.
