The Rt. Rev. Catherine Waynick

Guest Preacher Bishop Catherine Waynick

We were enormously privileged to welcome to Holy Comforter the Rt. Rev. Catherine Waynick, Bishop of the Diocese of Indianapolis. Bp. Cate, as she is commonly known, had been the Bishop of the southern half of the state of Indiana for 20 years, and was only the second woman to be the Diocesan-or senior-Bishop of any Diocese in the Episcopal Church. A native of Michigan who served churches in that state before being elected to Indianapolis, Bp. Cate was in the Chicago area to participate in the annual meeting of the Board of Governors of the Anglican Centre in Rome, an ecumenical organization dedicated to improving relations between the Anglican Communion and the Roman Catholic Church. She retired as the Bishop of Indianapolis exactly one week before her visit to Holy Comforter following the consecration of her successor, the Rev. Jennifer Baskerville-Burrows (many will remember Jennifer from her several presentations at Holy Comforter, as well as from the fact that her son, Timothy, attended All Things Bright and Beautiful for four years). This means that her visit to our parish was Bp. Cate's first post-retirement event, and we welcomed her warmly.
